The most interesting part of Graciosa is the southeast, which is almost entirely taken up by the island’s biggest nature attraction, the Caldeira. Along tunnel leads through into a crater, which is covered with pastures and forests. There is a nice picnic area with barbecue facilities and a small game preserve. A track runs around the crater rim, which reaches a maximum altitude of 402 metres on its eastern edge, giving splendid panoramic views across the island and its shores. On clear days, the mountains on the islands of Pico and São Jorge can be seen from here.
