Situated half way down the Lagoa do Fogo slope is the charming site of Caldeira Velha, which has exuberant, almost tropical, vegetation. There is a steaming fumarole (geyser) under leafy forest and tree ferns, and a pool below a natural cascade with warm (38°C), sulphurous water. This is an invitation to a relaxing bath, even though the water looks muddy and the sulphur has coloured the surrounding rocks orange. In this area, it is clearly evident that there is still volcanic activity in the region.
