Dominating the deserted centre of the island and designated a nature reserve, the impressive Caldeira do Faial, is one of the island’s major nature attractions to visit. The vast crater of an extinct volcano is almost 400 meters in depth and 2 kilometres across. Surrounded by blue hydrangeas and cedars, junipers and mosses, it is a wonderful place to see spectacular views over the city of Horta and the islands of Pico and São Jorge. There is a footpath all the way around its perimeter.
