Caldeira das Sete Cidades (Caldera of the seven towns) was named according to the legend of seven towns founded by expelled Spanish bishops, which sank. It has a perimeter of 12 km and a diameter of 7 km and its present shape was created during a tremendous eruption in 1445. The caldera has two large lakes, the Lagoa Verde with crystalline green water and Lagoa Azul with striking blue water, that are separated only by a narrow land bridge. Also within the crater is the charming hamlet of Sete Cidades with its curious houses, a small neo-Gothic church and a picturesque park with magnificent old trees.
