Located 28 km northeast of Povóa de Lanhosa, in the Peneda Gerês National Park, the Caldas do Gerês spa is surrounded by magnificent scenery. The springs were discovered and used by the Romans, but the first spa buildings were not established until the reign of João V (1706-1750). The waters are hypothermal, fluorinated, bicarbonated, sodic, hyposaline, lithinated and siliceous. Both preventative and regenerative programmes are available and are recommended for the treatment of hypertension, obesity, diabetes, kidney and gall stones and rheumatic diseases. Leisure activities include tennis, horse-riding, boating, fishing, swimming and skating and the Caniçada and Salamonde dams are nearby.
