Situated 7 km northwest of Guimarães, the charming town of Caldas das Taipas is a pleasant place for a stopover. Apart from its proximity to Citânia de Briteiros (see separate entry), it is close to another archaeological site Castro de Sabroso. The latter, whilst not as well preserved, was also explored by Martins Sarmento; it got its name from the substantial stone surrounding wall. Caldas das Taipas has an ancient spa with hot springs used for therapeutic purposes dating back to the Roman Empire. Nowadays there is modern hydrology equipment, an indoor thermal pool, exercise room, sauna and solarium.
