Arcos do Cachorro was formed by an impressive lava flow perforated by numerous tunnels and grottoes. The ocean thunders through these grottoes and tunnels, rushing in all directions. The configuration of Cachorro Arch resembles the muzzle of a dog. Approaching Cachorro visitors will be stunned by the totally black buildings, built without glass windows, high over the sea. They were built in this way to protect the residents from the weather and pirates. There is an old chapel in Cachorro which is the destination of penitential pilgrims from all over the Azores.
