Being named by the Romans ‘Promontorium Barbaricum’ gives some idea of the dangerous nature of this rocky promontory where the cliffs drop vertically into the sea and a lighthouse warns sailors of the treacherous rocks. The stunning views of the ocean and coast draw many tourists, who are also attracted to the pilgrimage church of Nossa Senhora do Cabo (see separate entry). Below, on the surrounding cliffs, there are fossilised footprints of Dinosaur tracks, including the way down to the partly pebble Lagosteiros Beach This is a site of natural beauty where the average summer seawater temperature is 17-18 ºC.
