Cabeço Gordo has an altitude of 3,422 feet (1,043 metres) and is located in the centre of the island. It offers amazing views of the neighbour islands of Pico and Sao Jorge. It is the island’s highest point and the crater has a diameter of about 1.5 km. The crater, a declared nature reserve, offers a unique landscape with green-covered slopes where junipers, tree-heather, cedars and ferns prevail. When the weather conditions are good, the views across the island are spectacular. There is also a path leading all around the crater rim, but this should only be undertaken when the weather is good.
