The town is set in beautiful countryside, within a vinho verde producing area known as the land of the Basto. A granite statue of a pre-roman Basto warrior with round shield stands in the town square. The most important monument is the 12th century Benedictine monastery of Refojos, rebuilt in the 17th century with an impressive dome surrounded by statues of the Apostles; it is located in the centre of town. The village of Arco de Baúlhe, once the end of the Tamega railway line, has an interesting railway museum housed in the old station.
