Close to the football stadium of the same name, Bonfim Park houses the bust of one of Setubal’s most unusual citizens, the poet António Maria Eusébio (1819-1911), better known as the ‘Bard of Setúbal’or ‘Calafate’. He was a boat caulker by trade (Calafate being the Portuguese for caulker). When the first volume of his work ‘Versos do Cantador de Setúbal’ was published in 1902, with a preface by the famous poet Guerra Junqueiro, he was 84. The bust was unveiled in 1968 and is the work of sculptor Castro Lobo and an initiative of the Setúbal Rotary Club.
