Located on the north side of Figueira da Foz, little is known of the history of Buarcos Fort which, together with the Santa Catarina and Palheiros forts, formed a costal defence system. It was built in the 16th or the beginning of the 17th century to protect the port and its population and has been classed as a Monument of Public Interest since 1961. Only the outer defensive wall remains today; it follows the contours of the Buarcos sea front.
