Commissioned in 1888 by King Carlos as a royal hunting lodge, the Buçaco Palace was built by Luigi Manini; completed in 1907, it was scarcely used by the royal family. It is said that the one occasion King Manuel II visited the palace was in 1910, shortly before his exile, when he was accompanied by the French actress Gaby Dely. Neo-Manueline in style, it is full of azulejo tiling and paintings by prominent artists; the azulejos in the hall depict the Battle of Buçaco (1810). Now a luxury hotel, it was rumoured to be a rendezvous for spies in World War II.
