The 13th century church of São Salvador de Bravães lies 4km west of Ponte da Barca (directions from the tourist office there). It has some of the finest Romanesque carvings in Portugal and is a National Monument. The plain façade is offset by the main portico with its archivolts and symbolic carvings depicting oxen, birds and monkeys. The tympanum consists of a carved relief of Christ with an angel on either side, and the carvings of the side door depict symbolic sheep. The interior has frescoes of St. Sebastian and the Virgin.
