Built at a cost of € 83.1 million for Euro 2004, the Braga Municipal Stadium is on the slopes of Monte Crasto, overlooking the River Cávado valley. It is located in a former quarry and was the concept of celebrated architect Eduardo Souto de Moura (b 1952); it is both innovative and a considerable engineering achievement. Seating 30,000, the ground has stands to the sides only and takes advantage of the sloping site to create a natural amphitheatre. The canopy style stand roofs are connected over the pitch by cables, a design which originated from the suspension principles of ancient Inca Bridges.
