The construction of the Cathedral was started by Henry of Burgundy in the 11th century and has undergone many architectural and decorative changes since. In spite of this, it is a harmonious mixture of Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline and Baroque styles and is a showpiece of Braga. Amongst the many features are the beautiful painted ceilings, the huge 18th century gilt organ casings decorated with cherubs and sea motifs and the carved upper choir stalls. The 14th century King’s chapel contains the tomb of the founder, Henry, and his wife Teresa. Their son Afonso Henriques became Portugal’s first king.
