Created in 1772 by the Marquês de Pombal, the Botanical Gardens of the University of Coimbra cover more than 32 acres and are claimed to be the largest and most beautiful in Portugal. To get to the entrance, take the steps down from the Dom Dinis Square and go under the 16th century aqueduct. The gardens are far more than just a collection of rare and exotic plants, with elegant fountains, statues, graceful gates and many species of birds in their natural environment.
