The Bonfim parish was founded in 1841 in the reign of Queen Maria II and Bonfim church, designed by architect José Geraldo da Silva Sardinha, was built between 1874 and 1894, replacing a 1786 chapel. The façade, although grandiose with its twin bell towers, is quite simply decorated; the staircase dates from the early 19th century. The interior is plain, but well proportioned, and has some interesting paintings. The organ was moved here from the São Bento da Ave Maria monastery; it dates from 1817 and was built by Friar Domingos Varela.
