The granite of the upper section of the stairway is contrasted with whitewashed walls and is in three sections. The first is the staircase of five senses representing, sense, sight, hearing, smell and touch, elaborated by statues, fountains, symbols and inscriptions. Then follows the staircase of the three virtues, representing faith, hope and charity, again symbolized by fountains and by allegorical figures. Finally at the summit you come to a terrace, with a pelican fountain, offering fantastic views and access to the church. On one side is the Chapel of Descent from the Cross.
