When visiting Bom Jesus do Monte one should go either up or down the monumental stairway by foot to appreciate the architecture and symbolism. However, for those unable to do so, there is the funicular, an experience in itself. Built by Niklaus Riggenbach, and in operation since 1882, it is the oldest funicular in the world operating on the principle of water counterbalancing. The journey takes between two and a half and four minutes and rises 116 metres over a distance of 274 metres. The upper station is beside the church. Not one accident has been recorded in its 125 years history.
