Regarded as Portugal’s most spectacular religious sanctuary, the Bom Jesus do Monte complex, situated on a steep slope east of Braga, is both a tourist attraction and a pilgrimage. The monumental stone staircase (see separate entries), was devised in 1722 by the archbishop of Braga, Rodrigo de Moura Teles, and work continued throughout the 18th century. The beautiful chapels are attributed to the Braga architect André Soares. This stairway is, above all, an expression of Christian life. The church, which can also be accessed by funicular (see separate entries), is surrounded by gardens and grottos hidden amongst the trees.
