Construction of the present church commenced in 1784 and the consecration took place in 1834. It was built on the site of a 15th century sanctuary which was restored, but subsequently damaged in the earthquake of 1755. Designed by Carlos Luis Ferreira Amarante, it is twin towered and built in the neoclassical style. The main doorway and the chapels of the Last Supper and Garden of Olives remain from the earlier church. Notable features are the high altar, painted ceilings and the organ. Outside are eight statues of those who condemned Jesus, including Herod and Pilate.
