Sixteen kilometres east of Chaves is an unusual national monument, the gigantic granite boulder known as the Pedra Bolideira. Some three metres high, ten metres long and weighing several tons, it gets its name from the Portuguese word for balancing. It is split into two and it is said that a gentle push will set the larger portion rocking. A few kilometres before Boldeira one can see the ruins of the Castle of Montforte, built to defend the former village of Monforte do Rio Livre. It was abandoned in 1853 and provides a splendid viewpoint.
