Map

Just west of the Marina, is the Boca do Inferno (Hell’s Mouth) a popular tourist attraction. The site consists of a grotto created by the constant pounding of the waves against the cliff. The ocean, which is particularly powerful along this coast, develops gigantic waves which hammer into the grotto creating an awesome noise. You cannot fail to appreciate the power of the sea. It was at this spot that Aleister Crowley, the self-proclaimed drug and sex fiend, faked his suicide in order to avoid his creditors, assisted it is said by the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa.
