Built in 1926, at 46 metres high, the Boa Nova lighthouse is 57 metres above sea level and one of the tallest in Portugal; it is adjacent to a huge petroleum tank farm. The surrounding 2-story keeper’s complex, was used as the school for lighthouse keepers from 1926 to 1962. Electrified in 1950 and connected to the national grid in 1964, the lighthouse then ran other beacons, making it the first remote control network in Portugal. Nearby are the statue of António Nobre by Barata Feyo, the Boa Nova Chapel and the famous restaurant and teahouse designed by Siza Vieira.
