Situated in the peaceful Largo da Sé is the 18th century Paço Episcopal which is still in use and has restricted access. With its distinctive Tesouro pyramid-shaped roofs and Manueline-style doorways contrasting with the plain façade, it is an interesting architectural style. Dom Francisco Gomes de Avelar, the Bishop of Algarve, devoted his life to Faro and was instrumental in the construction of many of its buildings and monuments. His statue now appropriately stands next to the Bishops’ Palace.
