Beside the former bishops’ palace is the Baroque garden, which is Castelo Branco’s top attraction. Also known as the Jardim do Paço, the garden was created in the 18th century by Bishop João de Mendonça and is a showpiece of elaborate flowerbeds, clipped hedges, fountains and lakes. It is, however, famous for its profusion of stone statues: apostles, saints, angels, allegorical figures, animals and lions staring at their image in pools. There is a complete series of Portuguese monarchs, with the hatred of the kings during the 60 year Spanish rule being expressed by the fact that they are half-size.
