Óbidos is a delightful walled town dominated by its castle, part of which is now a charming pousada. Afonso Henriques rebuilt the castle, after capturing it from the Moors in 1148, reputedly with his troops disguised as cherry trees. Both King Afonso II and King Dinis gave the town and its castle to their wives as a wedding gift. It is a perfect example of a medieval fortress and the sentry path along the battlements provides great views. Those romantically inclined might consider giving their wives the present of a dinner cooked and served medieval style at the pousada.
