South of the Rectory at the entrance to the Fátima Sanctuary there is a monument of the Berlin Wall. Construction of the Berlin Wall started on the 13th August 1961 and demolition commenced on 9th November 1989; it brought misery, death and deprivation. The memorial is in gratitude for God’s intervention and has a section of the wall, 1.2 metres wide by 3.6 metres high, given by Virgilio Casimiro, a Portuguese emigrant to Germany. It was designed by the architect J Carlos Loueiro and inaugurated on the 13th of August 1994.
