The island of Berlenga Grande, which is 4.5 km long and up to 800 metres wide, is part of the Berlenga archipelago and lies about 12 km northwest of Peniche. It has few permanent inhabitants. There is a regular ferry service and the day trip is an attraction which should not be missed. The island is a nature reserve (its principal attractions are detailed under separate entries for Berlenga Islands) and it has its own brand of magic. The boat trip takes about one hour and the regular ferry departs from the harbour, there are also independent day trip companies.
