The ferry from Peniche will take you on the hour journey to Berlenga Grande Island and the Praia do Carreiro do Mosteiro, to give Berlenga beach its full name, is located in the small cove where the ferry boat lands. The beach is named after the monastery that used to be on this site and, although small, offers beautiful transparent and calm waters, ideal for bathing, diving, and viewing fish. The reddish sand results from the erosion of the typical island granite. The average summer seawater temperature is 17 ºC and there is a restaurant on the island.
