Belmonte has many attractions in addition to those separately listed, including the tastefully restored mansions around the central square, demonstrating its past prosperity. The main street has a monument, erected in 1963, of Pedro Álvares Cabral, the town’s greatest son who discovered Brazil. The Igreja da Sagrada Família, built in 1940, contains the statue of Nossa Senhora da Esperança (Our Lady of Hope), said to have accompanied Cabral on his great voyage to Brazil. Adjacent to the castle, a warren of ancient alleys constitutes the old Jewish quarter which now has a modern synagogue and museum.
