The large 13th century granite Belmonte Castle was restored in 1940 and today has an amphitheatre for concerts and shows. Interesting features include the ornate mullioned Manueline window in an external wall, which was added at a later stage, and the Cabral family crest incorporating goats (cabras). The same crest can be seen in the nearby chapel, for in the 15th century this became the Cabral family home and the navigator Pedro Álvares Cabral (1467-1520), who discovered Brazil, was born here. You can walk the walls from which there are fantastic views.
