This palace has been the official residence of the President of Portugal since 1912. The original building dates from 1559, but it was considerably altered in the 17th and 18th centuries and the present building is as renovated in 1886. Previously a royal palace, King Jose I was in residence at the time of the great earthquake of 1755. The building escaped damage, but the official royal palace was completely destroyed. Also known as the Palácio Cor de Rosa because of its pink exterior, it houses the Presidency museum (see separate entry).
