Located on the east side of the National Forest of Buçaco, the monument to commemorate the centenary of the battle of Buçaco (1810) was inaugurated by King Manuel II. The features of the obelisk are the star at the top and the bronze crown and inscription at the base. During the battle the Anglo-Portuguese, under the Duke of Wellington, had 1,250 casualties compared with the 4,500 of the French, whose advance on Coimbra was halted and who shortly thereafter retreated to Spain. The windmill command posts of both General Crauford and Marshall Massena, at Sula and Moura respectively, are nearby.
