The equestrian statue of General Nuno Álvares Pereira stands on the south side of the abbey. He commanded the victorious army of King João I at the battle of Aljubarotta (1385). The entrance portal of the church has many carved statues including the twelve Apostles and, in the tympanum, Christ enthroned and flanked by the Evangelists. The abbey probably had Portugal’s first stained glass window workshop and the church windows are noteworthy. Those behind the choir date from the early 16th century and were made by Portuguese masters, including Francisco Henriques. If possible, enjoy the spectacle of the abbey’s night-time illuminations.
