The Founder’s Chapel, completed in 1434, is the work of the architect Huguet. The central octagon has a star shaped ceiling and the impressive joint tomb of King John I and his English wife Philippa of Lancaster, hand in hand, is positioned there with dramatic effect. The coats of arms of Avis and Lancaster are on the elaborately carved canopy and the king’s motto, ‘Por bem’(for the better) and that of the queen ‘Il me plait’(it pleases me), are inscribed on the cover plate of the tomb. The surrounding bays contain other royal tombs, including that of Henry the Navigator.
