The Royal cloister of João I, built in Gothic style, was the work of architects Afonso Domingues and David Huguet. It harmonizes perfectly with the Manueline tracery infill panels in alternating patterns, added at a later stage by Mateus Fernandes. In one corner of the cloister, in front of the refectory, there is a delightful Gothic Lavabo where the monks washed their hands, built around 1450. The comparatively sombre Afonso V cloister, with its conventional Gothic double pointed arches, was the work of architect Fernão de Évora and built in the second half of the 15th century.
