The star vault of the 19 metre square Chapter house rises to 20 metres high and is without intermediate support, it was, at the time of its construction, revolutionary. The project was considered so dangerous, that it was built by condemned prisoners only and failed twice during construction; legend has it that the design architect Huguet slept there on completion to convince doubters. The Chapterhouse contains the guarded graves of two unknown soldiers killed in World War I and the east wall features a stained glass window from 1508, showing scenes from the Passion and attributed to Master João and Francisco Henriques.
