When King João I won the battle of Aljubarotta, in 1385, he secured 200 years of independence from Spain. Thereafter, in fulfilment of a promise, he started work on the Dominican abbey of Santa Maria da Vitória. Construction continued until well into the 16th century, when King Manuel I decided to concentrate on the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon. The construction introduced new techniques and artistic styles to Portugal and the result is an outstanding masterpiece of late Gothic and Manueline architecture. The abbey was sacked and burnt by Napoleonic troops in 1810-1811, restoration started in 1840 and continued into the 20th century.
