Barrancos, a pretty white-washed Alentejo town, is located on the left bank of the River Guadiana, so close to the Spanish border that the town’s cultural identity has always been influenced by Spain. Nowhere is this more evident than in the local dialect (barranquenho) that mixes Portuguese and Castilian words. Once a parish of Noudar, Barrancos came into its own when Noudar lost its military importance. The 18th century Parish Church has a Baroque altar dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. The town is known for its traditional handicrafts, such as chairs made of willow and basketry.
