Barranco do Velho has a beautiful church, built in 1944 in the Algarvean rustic style, which looks out from the top of a hill and provides one of the most marvellous viewpoints in the Algarve. From the churchyard visitors can see an almost endless vista of hills covered with cork oaks, stretching away as far as Loulé, Salir and Alte. In the nearby ranges of hills are to be found picturesque thatched stone houses, round in shape as was usual in prehistoric times, that are now used as barns.
