The Alqueva Dam, just north of Moura is the largest reservoir in Western Europe. Alqueva, a village of about 350 inhabitants, gives the project the name and is the site of the biggest ostrich farm in Portugal. The dam was built during the 1990s and Aldeia da Luz, a small village in the projected flood zone, was completely rebuilt on a new site. Apart from being an incredible feat of engineering, the dam is also a beauty spot. Boat trips are available to take advantage of this beauty and there are also boats for hire.
