One of Barcelos’ main attractions is the market held on Thursdays in the centre of the town and said to be one of the largest in Europe. The hordes arrive mid-morning, so get there early and forget the car. The Campo da Republica is a huge square with a Rennaisance fountain in the centre. Barcelos has a diversified craft industry and a large selection of goods made in cottages in the surrounding areas is on sale. It’s all there, from clothes to livestock, wicker ware to vegetables, ceramics to cakes and the inevitable Barcelos cock.
