The Barcarena Gunpowder Museum is located about 4.5 km northeast of Oeiras, on the site of the old factory. This 100 acre site has been converted into a leisure and cultural centre, with interest and facilities for all. The factory’s origin is in the 16th century and it did not close until 1972 The museum, which is in the 17th century Mill House, covers both the manufacturing process and the factory history including vivid accounts of some of the fatal explosions which occurred. The museum opened in 1988 and includes restaurant and bar facilities, gardens, a lake and an art gallery.
