The Balhoa Menhir, found north of Monsaraz on the road from Telheiro to Outeiro, is a relic of the Megalithic culture that flourished in Europe and beyond. This large upright standing stone with inscriptions at the top is typical of its type. Menhirs may be found singly as monoliths (as this is), or as part of a group of similar stones. Over the centuries menhirs have variously been thought to have been used by Druids for human sacrifice, used as territorial markers or elements of a complex ideological system, or functioned as early calendars.
