The Balcoes Caves are of special interest and are invitations to discover the depths of the island. It’s recommended to visit with a guide and appropriate equipment as the caves are unattended and unlit. Care should be taken inside as the floors can be very slippery. Flashlights and appropriate clothing will also be needed for safe exploration of this cave. This is believed to be the biggest grotto of the Azores, with more than 4.6 kilometres of tunnels caused by volcanic lava flows.
