Located about 17 km east of Alenquer, the town of Azambura was founded in Roman times, but derives its name from the period of occupation by the Moors, when it was known as Azzabuja. The town expanded in the 16th century and the parish church and the Misericórdia church are from this period. The 18th century Palace of Obras Novas on the River Tagus, once a royal hunting lodge, was also used as an inn and was, in the days of steam trains, a station on the line from Lisbon to Constância.
