The Aveiro Museum, which opened in 1911, is housed in the former Convent of Jesus (see separate entry). Santa Joana, the daughter of Afonso V, retreated to the convent in 1472 and lived here until her death in 1490, she was beatified in 1693. The museum collection is from the Convent and other institutions which became the property of the State, after the banning of religious orders in the 19th century. Santa Joana’s portrait, attributed to the school of Nuno Gonçalves, and her ornate baroque tomb designed by João Antunes in the early 18th century are just two of the notable exhibits.
