Located on the south side of the entrance to the Ria de Aveiro alongside the Barra beach, the Aveiro lighthouse was built between 1885 and 1893. It is 62 metres tall rising from the two-storey keeper’s house, stands 66 metres above sea level and is Portugal’s tallest lighthouse (second in Europe and third in the world). The Aveiro light can be seen as far as 48 km out to sea. This tower is unusual in that it has a lift which was installed in 1958. A huge storm caused substantial damage in 1935 and protective sea walls were subsequently built.
